What's Happening with ADHD Care and Prescribing in the ACT?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common condition that affects people of all ages. For many years, people seeking a formal ADHD diagnosis and the medications often used to manage it needed to see a specialist doctor such as a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

This could mean long wait times and higher out-of-pocket costs.

Across Australia, health authorities and professional bodies have recognised these challenges and have been working to improve access to care. This includes planned reforms in the ACT that will, over time, enable appropriately trained GPs to both diagnose ADHD and manage ADHD treatment, including prescribing medicines.

The government has committed to reforms to give GPs greater scope to diagnose and prescribe ADHD medication locally, recognising the need to improve access for Canberrans rather than relying solely on specialist clinics. These changes are being introduced in a staged way and specific training and regulatory requirements apply.

At present in the ACT, prescriptions for controlled medicines such as the stimulant medications commonly used for ADHD still require psychiatrist commencement, however GPs with appropriate training will be able to continue these medications.

How The Surgery in Manuka Terrace can help

Dr Deepali Sharma at The Surgery in Manuka Terrace will provide ongoing ADHD care including regular review and medication management for patients with an established diagnosis.

  • If you are already under treatment and stable on your current ADHD medication, your GP can usually continue your prescriptions and support your overall care plan.

  • If you are seeking a new diagnosis, or your care needs are complex, your GP may refer you to a specialist for formal assessment; this specialist report can then be used to support shared ongoing care with your GP in Canberra.

Your GP is the best place to start the conversation. If you’re uncertain about what is required for ADHD assessment or prescribing, Dr Sharma or your usual GP can talk you through the current regulations in the ACT and how they apply to your situation.
