SKIN CHECKS
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and changes can happen gradually or without obvious symptoms. Regular skin checks are one of the most effective ways to detect skin cancers early, when they are easiest to treat.
Our GPs can provide thorough skin examinations using a structured, head-to-toe approach to assess moles, freckles and other skin lesions. During a skin check, your doctor will look for changes in colour, shape, size or texture that may indicate a potential concern.
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, which is why routine checks are recommended for many people, particularly those who:
-
Have fair skin or burn easily
-
Spend a lot of time outdoors
-
Have a large number of moles or freckles
-
Have previously had skin cancer
-
Have a family history of melanoma or other skin cancers

Your appointment may include:
-
A full skin examination
-
Assessment of any specific spots or moles you are concerned about
-
Digital dermatoscopy where appropriate
-
Advice on monitoring your skin and sun protection
-
Discussion of biopsy or removal if a suspicious lesion is identified
If a spot requires further investigation or treatment, your GP will explain the next steps and arrange follow-up care. Many procedures, including biopsies and simple removals, can often be performed at the clinic.
Regular skin checks are an important part of preventive healthcare, particularly in Australia’s high UV environment. If you’ve noticed a new or changing spot, or it has been a while since your last check, booking an appointment with a GP is a simple step that can make a significant difference to your long-term health.
