Lung cancer remains one of Australia’s most serious cancers, affecting both smokers and non-smokers.

It’s responsible for around 1 in 6 cancer-related deaths and approximately 15,000 deaths each year in Australia.
The good news? Thanks to better awareness, early diagnosis and new treatments, survival rates are improving. Early detection truly saves lives.
There are two primary types of lung cancer.
Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)
This is the most common type, making up around 85 to 90% of cases.
It tends to grow slower than small cell lung cancer.
Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)
Accounting for 10 to 15% of cases, SCLC grows and spreads quickly and is strongly linked to smoking.
Because of its aggressive nature, it’s often treated with chemotherapy and radiation rather than surgery.
Why Early Detection Matters
Lung cancer is far more treatable when found early. Recognising symptoms and speaking to your GP promptly can make a significant difference.
What To Look Out For
If you notice any of the following symptoms, book an appointment with your GP:
Persistent cough
Chest pain or trouble breathing
Coughing up blood
Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
Ongoing shortness of breath
Reducing Your Risk
Pay Attention to Exposure
Even if you’ve never smoked, long-term exposure to air pollution, workplace chemicals, or second-hand smoke can increase risk.
Get Checked Early
If you have a history of smoking or ongoing respiratory symptoms, screening may be recommended. Your GP can guide you.
Quit Smoking
Quitting at any age provides significant health benefits. If you’re ready to stop, we can help with quit programs and medication support.
Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones
Avoid second-hand smoke where possible and be mindful of long-term exposure to harmful pollutants and chemicals.
