Starting or growing your family is an exciting time, but planning a pregnancy involves more than just deciding when you’re ready. Taking the time to prepare your body, health, and lifestyle can make a big difference in your fertility, pregnancy, recovery, and the health of yourself and baby.

Book a Check-Up

One of the most important first steps you can take is to book a pre-pregnancy consultation with your GP. This is your opportunity to review your medical history, discuss any existing health conditions, medications, or lifestyle factors, and help you plan for a healthy pregnancy.

Your GP may recommend:

  • Blood tests to check immunity (e.g. rubella, chickenpox)

  • Cervical screening if due

  • A review of current medications

  • Pre-pregnancy vaccinations

  • Genetic carrier screening if appropriate

Pregnancy Supplements

Folic acid is essential for early brain and spinal cord development in your baby. Ideally, women should start taking a supplement of 400 micrograms daily for at least one month before conception and continue through the first trimester. Your doctor can recommend the right prenatal supplement for you.

Review Lifestyle Habits

Now is a good time to reduce alcohol, quit smoking, maintain a balanced diet, and keep physically active. If you have a chronic health condition (like diabetes or thyroid issues), managing these closely and with care before conception can improve outcomes significantly.

Understand Your Cycle and Timing

Understanding your menstrual cycle can help you know when you’re most fertile. Your GP can provide guidance on ovulation tracking, fertility windows, and when to seek further help if conception takes longer than expected.

Emotional and Mental Health Matters Too

Preparing for pregnancy isn’t just physical. Managing stress, getting enough sleep, and addressing any mental health concerns before trying to conceive is important. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious, your GP can help you connect with supportive resources.
